Although a slave owner and conservative, Taylor became a supporter of the anti slavery views of the Whigs and championed in 1850 the admission to statehood of California, an antislavery state. Taylor threatened to use force to keep the South from leaving the Union. After his death, a compromise allowed slavery to continue in the South.
