He declared war on Spain in April 1898 after influential U.S. newspapers blamed Spain for an explosion that sank the battleship Maine in Havana, Cuba, harbor. Cuba was placed under U.S. military rule. Spain ceded Puerto Rico and the island of Guam, and sold the Philippines to the United States for $ 20 million. McKinley also annexed Hawaii. Through the Gold Standard Act of 1900 he established gold as the backing for U.S. currency.
