He was the Allied commander-in-chief from 1943 to the end of World War II. His tremendous popularity as a war hero served him well during his political career. He settled the Korean War with an armistice signed in July 1953. Eisenhower sponsored formation of the Southeast Asian Treaty Organization (1954) and sent military advisors to South Vietnam (1955). His efforts to ease the Cold War tensions with Moscow collapsed in May 1960 when the U.S. U-2 spy-plane was shot down over Russia. In 1961 Eisenhower broke all diplomatic relations with Cuba, which had become a Communist under Fidel Castro. About his private life: Would anyone have listened to any young woman if Dwight D.
