Presided over the acquisition of Florida from Spain for $ 5 million in 1819. Expounded the Monroe Doctrine (1823), being the principle that Europe should not intervene in the affairs of independent countries in the New World. North-South quarrels over the extension of slavery was ended temporarily by the Missouri Compromise (1820-21) under the terms of which Missouri was admitted to the Union as a slave state, but slavery would be prohibited in future states.

His term is called the "Era of Good Feeling" because there was little partisan fighting. He formulated the Monroe Doctrine, which declared the Americas off-limits to European meddling.
