Welcome... Let's not forget eateries are not only centers of pleasure but also cultural hubs. Cleanliness has been an issue for all people since they first started to gather and eat... A word about the necessity and use of napkins... Table napkins or serviettes are pieces of linen to protect the clothing and are used to wipe ones mouth and fingers at the table, beside other uses. The use of table napkins is newer than the use of towels, like Oshi Buris for example. Table napkins were practically unknown in the Western world till about the 16th century. Up till then diners who could afford linen would use the table cloth to clean their fingers on. The French used to have doubliers, a second cloth and often a longiere, a third cloth just for the purpose of wiping one's hands.
Monika Lewinsky type ladies might not use napkins at times when it would be the most appropriate, such may cause costly spills on the dress.
